Первая колючая проволока появилась в 1873; изобретена Дж. Ф. Глидденом [Glidden, Joseph F.]. Промышленное производство колючей проволоки позволило огородить пастбища на Великих равнинах [ Great Plains], где до этого скот пасся самостоятельно и без присмотра. Появление колючей проволоки наткнулось на сопротивление крупных скотоводов, чей скот всю зиму пасся на "ничейной" общественной земле.
